Your 2024 Pro-Abortion Gift Guide ššāšø
Online shopping to self-soothe? Looking for other ways to help abortion funds? Trying to make a statement at the family holiday party? This list is for you.
This is what Iāve decided to focus on in lieu of doomscrolling. I love abortion funds. I do too much online window shopping. I love buying clothes and knick-knacks. Come on this journey with me.
Things you wonāt see in this gift guide: āpro-choiceā language (x)(x), āI dissentā merch (x), Handmaidās Tale-inspired designs (x)(x), Roe v. Wade throwbacks (x)(x), or coat hanger imagery (x)(x). Click the links if you want to learn why I avoid those abortion slogans and symbol clichĆ©s.
We all know that restricting abortion does not reduce its demand. Guttmacherās Monthly Abortion Provision Study reported that in 2023, an estimated 1,037,000 abortions occurred in the formal healthcare system, an 11% rise since 2020. This number does not include self-managed abortions, which have been steadily on the rise even before the Dobbs v. Jackson decision. (x)(x)
Unsurprisingly, requests for financial and practical support have increased considerably since Dobbs. According to the National Network of Abortion Funds, in the year after SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade:
Abortion funds reported a 39% increase in requests for support to access abortions.Ā
Abortion funds dispersed $10,080,317 in practical support funding ā a 178% increase from the year before.
Immediately following Dobbs, abortion funds reported a large increase in donations and then a dramatic decline. Meanwhile, the need for support continues to rise. (x)
When I worked at an abortion clinic in Texas (which was the second-most high-volume abortion clinic in the U.S. at the time), nearly every patient needed financial support of some kind. Not everyone was lucky enough to catch the local fundās first-come, first-serve weekly fund distributions. Additional financial barriers included gas, lodging, childcare, and enough time off work to make two or three appointments on short notice. I remember speaking to a woman who had trouble accessing pads after her procedure. Since I left clinic work in 2019, many people in the U.S. report that they have become more financially insecure (x), and their access to reproductive healthcare has been interrupted at least once. (x)
Abortion funds still need our attention and donations. Other than donating monthly and sharing your local fundās content on social media, you can also support abortion funds by buying their merch.
Consider this impulse-spending for a good cause.
Many of the abortion funds and other reproductive health non-profits featured below sell their merch on Bonfire.com. If you like a design, you can choose a different color or style depending on your needs. Bonfire also lets you use your own designs to fundraise for an organization. You donāt need to be affiliated with the organization, you just need to know its EIN. Iāve toyed with this feature on my own Bonfire store here.
Profits from all items featured benefit abortion funds or practical support networks. Other pro-abortion organizations, websites, and companies like Shout Your Abortion, Abortion Every Day, Mayday Health, Plan C, Liberal Jane Illustration, and ACCESS Podcast have online shops, but they are not included here because they are not abortion or practical support funds.
Now, here are some of my favorite finds!
